In Hometown, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require testing for drugs or alcohol through hair, our specialized services are available nationwide, including numerous testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a prevalent method for drug screening. They're favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over conventional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation programs, hair tests offer a key advantage: they detect drug use over a 90-day period, are collected under observation, and are difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance use involving drugs and alcohol. Hair captures extended substances history by locking in biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for drugs and alcohol extending up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, offers some resistance to tampering, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, encompassing about 200 strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. It’s advisable to weigh samples using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types like facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering the sample into a laboratory’s database. It includes affirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any required data input that’s missing from electronic custody records.

Screening conducts an initial rapid inspection for drug usage. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most examples, a positive result must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples indicating positive results in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Upon a positive indication at Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing a demanding process to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before the final confirmation if required. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug intake over a span of up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a limited detection timeframe.
  • Reduction in tampering: Hair drug screenings are challenging to falsify, resulting in increased result accuracy.
  • History tracking: These tests can depict a timeline of drug consumption, showing patterns rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other drug assessment methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair shade and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual testing examines the hair shaft rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
