Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Hooverson Heights, West Virginia. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, we operate testing facilities nationwide, capable of executing a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing solutions.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are becoming the preferred method among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, court systems, and probationers are adopting this method. The key advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, combined with observed collection which makes it nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, providing a lengthy history of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use for up to around three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel screenings, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is absent, equivalent body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory's drug testing process involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for substances. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumptively identified as positive need further validation.

Should a sample test positive in Screening, more hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other tests (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complicated to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive test is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing positive presumptively are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Each laboratory step from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug evaluations can discover drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests, which have shorter detection spans.
  • Challenge to deceive: Attempting to cheat a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a record of drug usage over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally entail higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
