Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hundred, West Virginia. If a drug or alcohol test using hair is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing. We operate testing centers across all cities nationwide where hair tests can be administered. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown of the head or other body areas. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for conducting drug screens. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection period, typically up to 90 days. Collected under observation, this test is hard to tamper with, though for recent drug use within five days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Through capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair provides an extended history of substance use. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to send.

Taking a 1.5-inch piece consisting of about 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and further confirmation. For EtG testing or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen is advised. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair is specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Through Accessioning, the initial sample processing into a lab’s system occurs. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not carried out by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening economically rules out drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples testing as presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks past drug usage: It can reveal a history of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often costs more compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the actual hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hundred, WV, hair follicle drug testing surpasses traditional urine tests in various ways. Why choose hair testing? One significant advantage is its extended detection window, allowing for the identification of drug use up to 90 days prior. This surpasses urine tests, which generally detect recent use, capturing only the last few days or weeks.

Precision: Hair tests offer improved accuracy, as the test samples are not easily adulterated. This means that the likelihood of false negatives or positives is considerably lowered compared to urine tests. Hair drug testing is becoming the preferred choice of many employers due to these benefits.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing in Hundred, WV, provides a much lengthier detection window for identifying drug use. What makes this beneficial? Employers can review an individual’s substance use history spanning up to 90 days, offering a far more comprehensive perspective than urine tests, which are limited to recent consumption.

With this testing method, it's easier to identify patterns of substance abuse rather than isolated incidents. The extended detection timeframe equips employers with crucial insights into an employee or applicant’s lifestyle choices, thus significantly supporting hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Hundred, WV, offers a tamper-resistant approach ensuring that sample adulteration risks are significantly minimized. This reliability makes it an attractive method for drug testing, as once a hair specimen is collected, it becomes challenging to alter the outcomes without trace.

This testing method’s inherent resistance to tampering provides results that are dependable and unquestionable. Employers and individuals concerned with test integrity can trust the process, knowing that any attempt to modify results is effectively barred.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
