In Jerryville, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a drug or alcohol test via hair samples, our specialization in hair testing is available across the country with numerous testing centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is needed. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom testing solutions.

The trend of using hair follicle drug tests has gained momentum in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly select hair tests over urine ones. This method benefits organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and supervised individuals. Hair follicle tests are favored for their extended detection period—up to 90 days—alongside the reliability of observed sample collection. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug usage within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the head, hair can offer a detection timeframe of nearly three months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need further verification.

If a sample is found presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This is where substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are very tough to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It reveals a drug use pattern over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become detectable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
