Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Kimball, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in this field, with centers across every city nationwide capable of conducting this type of testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted to include hair follicle tests. These are now commonly mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Ideal for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, hair tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are performed under observation, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When taken adjacent to the scalp, hair can present roughly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch portion from around 200 hair strands near the scalp (analogous to a #2 pencil's circumference) yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the sample. If head hair isn't available, a similar volume of body hair can be utilized. Mentioning head hair relates solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, like facial or axillary hair, and so forth.

Process Overview

The primary phases in a lab's drug testing procedure consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample’s proper sealing and dispatch, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry as needed, excluding data provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. At this stage, substance extraction from hair occurs at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing presents the highest complexity.

Any positive results from initial screening are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples deemed presumptive positive are cleansed before verification if necessary. Every laboratory procedure—from Accessioning to Confirmation—undergoes review per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter duration.
  • Harder to manipulate: Cheating a hair test proves very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It demonstrates a pattern of drug consumption over time beyond mere recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs are identifiable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are costlier than other testing modes.
  • Result variance: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle itself.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Outmatches Urine Tests in Kimball, WV: Hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests. Its ability to identify substance use over an extended period is unmatched, providing a reliability that urine tests lack.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
