What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by securing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the recommended amount for both initial analysis and verification. For EtG screening, add-ons, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically indicating scalp hair only. Body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps involved in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a specimen into the laboratory’s systems. This process verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an automated chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for substance misuse. Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most specimens, yet a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal defensibility. Any specimens that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are separated from the hair at a significantly lesser concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical evidence: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: There is an approximate 5-7 day period before drugs can be detected in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kincaid, WV, hair follicle tests excel over urine tests with superior detection capabilities and consistent reliability. Moreover, the accuracy of these tests is unrivaled, as they are not easily manipulated, ensuring a genuine reflection of substance use.
