Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Leewood, West Virginia. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair tests ensures you're covered nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, often gathered from the head or body, is required. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals favor this method over traditional urine tests. It’s a common choice for zero-tolerance workplaces and probation checks due to its extended detection ability up to 90 days, nearly cheat-proof nature, and observed collection process. Nonetheless, for evaluating drug use in the last five days, urine tests remain preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a chronological record of alcohol and substances by securing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When acquired near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is suggested to use 150mg of the sample. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When we refer to head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in laboratory processing of a substance test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary entry of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample was securely sealed and properly shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial, rapid review for drugs of concern. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude substance usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be verified for court acceptance. Samples that screen positive on a preliminary basis require secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample screens positive on a preliminary basis, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting why hair substance analysis is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each sample that preliminarily tests positive is cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can identify drug use over a 90-day span, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Reduced likelihood of tampering: The chance of tampering with a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: It offers a pattern of substance use over extended periods, unlike recent use detection alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests generally carry higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing
When juxtaposed against urine tests, hair follicle testing in Leewood, WV, displays distinct advantages. Its detection window is longer, giving a clearer picture of past substance use. Hair tests are harder to alter, ensuring more dependable outcomes for employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
