Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Leon, West Virginia. For individuals requiring a hair or alcohol drug screening, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis and operates test centers countrywide, including every city, capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are necessary. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing solutions.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those overseeing probation. The significant advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their extended detection span up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making them almost impossible to tamper with. When detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair analysis can reveal substance use over the past three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and it can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 hair fibers (comparable to a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial screening and further analysis. For EtG testing, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample's weight. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. Specifically, head hair pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure of processing a drug test result in the lab involves four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's database. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive result requires further confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test positive during Screening require a second confirmatory test.

In instances where a sample is found presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the preliminary sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair testing being a highly complex method.

Confirmation for a positive Screening outcome is carried out using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is conducted in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to deceive: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test ensures greater accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
