Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Madison, West Virginia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area and has facilities across all cities nationwide qualified to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other personalized testing choices.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test is increasingly utilized for drug screening. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over the conventional urine test. Hair drug tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, courts, and people on probation. A key advantage is its extended drug detection capability, generally up to 90 days, with monitoring during collection, making it hard to falsify. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use in the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have become recognized as an effective method for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by keeping biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a detection window of up to 3 months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, making tampering with it challenging, and it is simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for thorough screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG or more than 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn’t accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. The term 'head hair' specifically references scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result can be broken down into four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any necessary data not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

In the Screening stage, an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse is undertaken. Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples; however, results that are positive necessitate verification to be legally valid. Samples preliminarily deemed positive during Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is utilized and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening findings is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is examined under the Hair designation by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) and within the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It reveals a drug use pattern over a stretch of time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
