Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Malden, West Virginia. For those needing drug or alcohol assessments, we are experts in hair analysis and provide testing facilities nationwide, including all cities. Typically, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp, but body hair may also be used. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored for their zero-tolerance enforcement in organizations, legal requirements, and probation situations. The key advantage is their longer detection window, reaching up to 90 days, ensuring an observed sample collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has been recognized as an effective instrument for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. If gathered near the scalp, hair offers around a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional elements, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferable. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary processes in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in legal contexts. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is likely positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at considerably lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are subjected to washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Shows historical use: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variation can influence the concentration of drug traces in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
