Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessment services in Middlebourne, West Virginia. When a hair or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise in hair testing is supported by facilities nationwide, ready to conduct these analyses. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required, although body hair can suffice. Hair testing options include checking for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom analysis.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug screening recently. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair testing over urine analysis. Employers upholding strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers often utilize these tests. Hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days and involve a monitored collection, making them difficult to manipulate. For recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extensive timeline by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of continuously growing hair strands. When hair is harvested near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeline nearing 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be procured. When we mention head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all alternate types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of drug test results unfolds in four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step consists of ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective measure to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to stand in court. Any samples registering presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

With a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drug substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis a challenging procedure.

Positive screening confirmations are executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The end-to-end lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) designation for Hair and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests' narrower detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Being challenging to circumvent, hair drug tests yield more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage history: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this analysis evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
