Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Millstone, West Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area and provides testing sites in cities across the nation. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body for testing. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized with other testing options.

The trend has shifted towards hair follicle drug testing for drug screening in recent years. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals favor a hair test over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation departments increasingly rely on hair tests. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, and because collections are observed, it's nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by seizing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair, while "body hair" refers to other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for abusive drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a specimen is presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive result from the Screening phase is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very hard, ensuring more trustworthy results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Diverse results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
