Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug analyses in Mineral Wells, WV. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair procedures and provides accessible locations nationwide. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. Hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Drug testing methodologies increasingly favor hair follicle exams over traditional measures. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and addiction specialists now opt for hair tests in place of common urine screening. This method appeals to zero-tolerance workplaces, the legal system, and those on probation due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and its near impossibility to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use in the past five days, urine remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands' fibers. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for assessment and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, equal body hair may be utilized. In referencing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair is comprised of all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the preliminary handling of a sample into the lab's framework. It includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data input not supplied by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be considered valid in court. Any samples that are deemed presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening step, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are derived from hair at significantly lower concentrations when compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which highlights why hair drug screening is notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of each presumptively positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite arduous, rendering results more precise.
  • Delivers historical insights: Displays the pattern of drug usage over a significant period, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Not applicable for detecting recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
