Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Mount Carbon, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing means we have facilities in cities Nationwide that can provide this service. Ideally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, even body hair in most situations. Hair tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Many workplaces, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and probation departments. The main advantage of hair tests lies in their extended detection window, often up to 90 days, with observed sample collection making cheating difficult. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair presents an extended timeline of alcohol and drug history by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, it can offer a detection window reaching up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion with about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is advised. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow to process a drug test result includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a specimen into a lab's system. This involves checking the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While it is an economical method to identify drug usage across most samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates verification for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Drugs here are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug evaluations.

Verification of any positive Screening findings is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo cleaning before verification, as necessary. The complete laboratory pipeline, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug evaluation:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can detect substances for up to 90 days, versus the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: The difficulty in cheating a hair test ensures higher result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers a usage pattern over time, not limited to recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: A timeframe of 5-7 days is required before substances appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair evaluations tend to cost more than alternate testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair characteristics including color and individual growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the method actually examines the strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests in Mount Carbon, WV, the advantages are clear. Hair tests offer greater detection accuracy and reliability, making them the preferred choice for many. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests can detect drugs used over a longer time frame, ensuring comprehensive substance history review.

Extended Detection Window

In Mount Carbon, WV, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a standout feature. It can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, providing employers with an extensive overview of an individual's substance history. This long detection period gives a more thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's past drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
