Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents a greater challenge.
Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All assumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
