Accredited Drug Testing provides top-notch hair follicle drug assessments in Nitro, West Virginia. If you're looking to conduct a drug or alcohol evaluation using hair samples, we are the experts, with facilities in every city across the nation ready to carry out such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or elsewhere is necessary. This method checks for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, or offers tailored testing solutions.

Over the past few years, conducting drug assessments has increasingly incorporated the hair follicle test. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug evaluations over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle testing is preferred by companies enforcing strict drug-free policies, judiciary bodies, and those under probation. Its major advantage is being able to track drug use over a lengthier timeframe of up to 90 days. The method involves an observed collection, making tampering almost unfeasible. Nevertheless, for monitoring recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a potent means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can furnish up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be sourced. In discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is a factor contributing to hair drug testing's complexity.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples deemed presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine testing which offers a limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical insights: It provides a history of substance use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent ingestion: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
