Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Old Fields, West Virginia. For those needing drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis with centers nationwide, ready to carry out such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a prominent method. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse authorities are favoring this over the standard urine test. Employers adopting zero-tolerance policies, legal bodies, and individuals on probation benefit from its long detection window, observing drug use up to 90 days, under strict supervision, and with minimal risk of manipulation. Yet, for detecting very recent drug usage, under five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When hair samples are obtained near the scalp, they can reveal alcohol and drug use within an approximate 3-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) that is cut closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may suffice. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in integrating a sample into the laboratory's system, which involves checking if the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry required if not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial fast assessment for drug misuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples, confirmation is necessary for court admissibility if a screen returns positive. Presumptively positive samples in Screening need further confirmation.

If the Screening highlights a presumptively positive sample, more hair from the initial sample is used for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite tough, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It displays a timeline of drug use over several months rather than solely current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
