Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pike, West Virginia. For hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing with centers available nationwide to conduct these tests. It generally requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for evaluating drug use. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests instead of urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation prefer hair follicle tests for their extended detection range, reaching up to 90 days, observed collection, and near-impossibility of manipulation. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of substances by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal substance use within a timeframe of roughly 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) collected nearest to the scalp is ideal, weighing 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test sample in a lab includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is integrated into the lab’s system. This process ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances. While Screening economically rules out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are initially positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Positive results from the Screening stage are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All initially positive samples are cleaned before the confirmation process as necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Difficult to evade: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: It provides a history of substance use over time, not just current usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth rates can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pike, WV, hair follicle drug testing surpasses urine tests due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a broader detection range, capturing a more extensive history of drug use compared to traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
