Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Pratt, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing stands out. If you're searching for a hair or alcohol test, our team excels at hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, sourced from either the scalp or body. We offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and tailored testing solutions to meet various needs.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests in drug assessments has increased. Many entities like employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Suitable for zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probation cases, the primary advantage of hair tests is their extended drug detection span—up to 90 days—making them hard to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent drug activity within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate long-term evidence of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around 90 days for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 strands (the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and evaluations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains only to scalp hair. "Body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test process consists of four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples undergo initial processing into the laboratory’s system. Verification of correct sealing and shipment, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and final data entry, not covered by an electronic chain of custody system, are all part of this stage.

Screening involves an initial brief check for substances of abuse. Despite Screening being a cost-effective method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive is required for legal admissibility. Samples preliminarily positive during Screening need additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, substances are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly unlikely, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of substance use over time, beyond immediate usage.

Challenges:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites present.

Note: Although labeled as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing: In Pratt, WV, hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are common, hair testing offers a longer detection window, capturing usage up to 90 days prior, compared to the limited few-day detection of urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
