Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Raysal, West Virginia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair assessments, with centers available across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body hair is needed. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug assessments have grown more prominent for drug screenings. Many organizations, judicial systems, and addiction professionals favor hair tests over standard urine assessments. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers frequently use hair follicle drug evaluations. The primary advantage is an extended detection timeline, often reaching up to 90 days, using an observed sample collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the preferred method for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized for its effectiveness in detecting alcohol and drug use. It offers a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the growing hair's fibers. Hair taken near the scalp can reveal alcohol and drug use over roughly a 3-month period. This method of collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly pencil-sized) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for examination and validation. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is encouraged. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample's entry into the laboratory system. It incorporates ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any requisite data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drug use. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptively positive results from Screening require further confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), hence, hair drug screening is considered the toughest methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive are subjected to washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for nearly 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, which enhances the results' accuracy.
  • Historical data availability: It offers a timeline of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Fails to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically have a higher price point compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing options in Raysal, WV, hair follicle testing emerges as superior due to its enhanced detection accuracy. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair analysis offers far-reaching traceability over extended periods.
This methodological superiority is seen in its ability to detect drug use over several months, as opposed to the comparatively short window offered by urine tests. Additionally, its precision adds reliability to the overall process, making it a preferred choice.

Extended Detection Window

In Raysal, WV, hair follicle drug testing provides an expansive detection window of up to 90 days, capturing detailed substance histories. This comprehensive timeframe offers employers an invaluable insight into applicants' or personnel's long-term drug use.
Unlike other methods, hair tests give a more extensive view, making them indispensable for evaluating an individual's substance-related behavior. An extended detection period allows employers to make better-informed decisions regarding hiring and maintaining a secure workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Raysal, WV trusts the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests to deliver consistent and indisputable results. Their significant reduction in sample adulteration risks makes them an ideal choice for drug screening processes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
