Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Richwood, West Virginia. For hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise and numerous nationwide centers ensure easy hair testing access. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly been used for drug screening. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and rehab professionals prefer hair over standard urine tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days. Collection is observed, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, urine tests remain more accurate for recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate three-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for assessment and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation as its four key steps.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, issuing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial cursory examination for illicit drugs. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, positive results must be confirmed to be legally viable. Samples with presumptively positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

A sample deemed presumptively positive during Screening prompts more hair to be extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning as necessary prior to confirmation. The laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that possess a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis inspects the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why choose hair follicle testing in Richwood, WV, over traditional urine tests? The answer lies in its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing offers unparalleled benefits, detecting substance use patterns with greater precision.
Reliable Detection: Hair tests excel in identifying drug use over extended periods, reducing false negatives common to urine tests.

Increased Accuracy: Higher accuracy rates with hair follicle tests ensure all substance use history is uncovered. Urine tests have a limited window, often failing to capture long-term patterns, making them less comprehensive.
For employers, this reliability translates to peace of mind and informed hiring decisions, utilizing a robust screening tool like hair testing.

Extended Detection Window

In Richwood, WV, hair follicle testing offers a remarkable advantage with its extended detection window. Unlike traditional methods limited to recent usage, hair tests can reveal drug use spanning up to 90 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
