Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rivesville, West Virginia. Whether you require a hair drug test or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures that testing centers across the nation, including all cities, are ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically, hair samples from the crown with a length of 1.5 to 2 inches are sufficient, with body hair as an alternative. Hair tests can be tailored for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair-based tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation find hair follicle drug tests advantageous. Their key benefit lies in an extended detection window for substances, typically up to 90 days, through a supervised collection process, providing a challenging test to compromise. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now viewed as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage through the preservation of biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they develop. Collected near the scalp, hair samples can provide an approximate detection timeframe of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) from the scalp area yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent body hair sample is acceptable. Head hair is specific to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab process for determining a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of entering a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples testing positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

A Screening presumptive positive prompts further extraction of hair from the initial specimen. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentrations than from urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as appropriate. Every phase, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter windows.
  • Difficulty in deception: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It indicates a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs require about 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite being frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
