Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rossmore, West Virginia. If a drug or alcohol hair test is required, our specialization in hair testing is supported by centers nationwide. Most cases need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing is becoming a more common method of drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This type of test is ideal for situations demanding zero drug tolerance, court cases, or probation conditions, offering an extended 90-day detection window with observed collection that's hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a chronicling medium for alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to an estimated 3-month observation period for detecting alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. The term "head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. Meanwhile, "body hair" includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Outline of the Process

The key steps in the lab-processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This stage includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance use. While Screening is an economically viable means to rule out substance use on most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Any samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a sample is initially considered positive during the Screening phase, extra hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower density than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus rendering hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology to implement.

Validation of any anticipated positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All anticipated positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can showcase patterns of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: A period of roughly 5-7 days is required for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine tests in Rossmore, WV, mainly due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent drug use, hair tests capture substance history over extended periods, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual’s habits. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
