Located in Sandyville, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our specialty centers offer hair testing Nationwide, including in every city. Generally, individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head or body for testing purposes. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific analytes through hair testing.

In recent years, drug testing increasingly includes hair follicle tests. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests to typical urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal requirements, or those under probation. A major advantage is the extended detection window, showing drug use for up to 90 days, under observation, and offering fewer chances to manipulate results. Despite this, testing urine is more precise for detecting use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have gained recognition as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, making it harder to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 strands near the scalp (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or tests with more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's beneficial to weigh the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial insertion of the sample into the laboratory’s system, where the sample's proper sealing and shipping are checked, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any further data not given digitally is entered manually.

Screening executes an initial rapid check for drug misuse. Though it efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates further confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptive positive samples from Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

For positively presumed samples in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods like urine or oral fluids, which contributes to the challenge of hair drug screening processes.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. If necessary, all samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Its results are precise due to the challenge of tampering with a hair drug test.
  • Yields historical patterns: It reveals drug usage patterns over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
