Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Scarbro, West Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and operates testing centers throughout all U.S. cities. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is necessary for testing in most situations. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

Over recent years, the inclusion of hair follicle drug tests in drug testing protocols has become more prevalent. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests instead of the usual urine tests. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often opt for hair follicle testing. A significant advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, combined with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof against tampering, though, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests still hold the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become an effective measure for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its strands as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for up to a 3-month duration. The process of hair collection is straightforward, tampering with it is relatively challenging, and it is convenient to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp results in a 100mg sample, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process of obtaining a drug test result involves four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab’s database. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assay to detect drug use. Although Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug usage across most samples, any positive results require confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further validation.

For samples testing presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted at concentrations far lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Any screen-confirmed positive results undergo GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for Confirmation. All positive presets are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated based on both the CAP Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, making results more authentic.
  • Historical insight: It reveals drug use patterns over an extensive period, not merely recent involvement.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable within hair 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur a higher cost than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination is performed on the hair strand, not on the scalp follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
