Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in the Shepherdstown district, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair tests, and we have centers all over the country equipped to perform them. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for detecting drug use. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over the standard urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug-free policies, the judicial system, and monitored individuals. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, collected through observed procedures, making it difficult to falsify results. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When extracted near the scalp, hair can present up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical approach for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Any samples that yield a presumptively positive result in Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptively positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the authorization to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can delineate a pattern of substance use over time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: There is a latency of approximately 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
