Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shinnston, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we at Accredited Drug Testing specialize in hair testing, with facilities in all major cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the crown of your head or from your body. Our hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other customizable options.

Recently, the methodology for drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor a hair drug test over the traditional urine sample. Hair follicle tests are ideal for ensuring zero-tolerance drug use policies in workplaces, court-ordered testing, and individuals on probation. Their primary advantage is a prolonged detection period, generally spanning about 90 days. The collection is closely monitored, reducing the likelihood of tampering. For drug use detection within the last five days, however, urine tests remain the standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into the lab system. This involves checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast test for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Any positive screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can indicate a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing triumphs over urine tests in Shinnston, WV, with its superior detection capabilities. Its extended window allows for up to 90 days of substance use retrieval, vastly outpacing the limited range of urine tests. Such enhanced detection provides a fuller picture of potential substance use, presenting a clear advantage in accuracy and reliability.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing eliminates the potential for tampering, ensuring results maintain integrity. The high precision and thoroughness make it the test of choice for those requiring reliable substance abuse screening, setting a higher standard. Regardless of attempted evasion, hair tests maintain credibility, safeguarding accurate outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Shinnston, WV is known for revealing drug use over a significantly prolonged time frame. With a detection window of up to 90 days, this method affords employers a comprehensive insight into a candidate or employee's substance use history. Such detailed analysis aids in painting an accurate picture of one’s long-term habits.

This expansive view granted by hair testing provides employers with the essential information needed for making informed employment decisions. Workers thus understand the long-term reach of potential tests, promoting a drug-free workplace. This extended overview surpasses limitations of other tests, enhancing reliability in substance monitoring.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Shinnston, WV sees increased trust in hair follicle testing due to its tamper-resistant nature. Conventional methods occasionally suffer from sample adulteration risks, but hair tests offer a robust alternative. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
