In Slanesville, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in these tests and provide services in cities nationwide. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is usually required. Tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include other custom hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent years for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, probation requirements, and provide a longer detection period, up to 90 days, with observed collection, making them difficult to dupe. Nonetheless, urine tests remain accurate for drug use detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands, hair reveals a prolonged history of substance use. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of nearly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process of obtaining a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry lacking from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug usage on most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be viable for court. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

In instances where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drug substances are isolated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to administer.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation, if necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It's extremely difficult to compromise a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It provides insight into drug usage patterns over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
