Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Smithfield, West Virginia. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have centers in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair analyses. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are sufficient. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or personalized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a common method for drug screening. Organizations, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals often choose these over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and those on probation. Their main advantage is a 90-day detection timeframe, conducted in a monitored process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains most precise.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair follicle testing is perceived as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair stores a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fiber of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, it offers around a three-month window of detection for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs, comparable in size to a #2 pencil, provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If head hair is not an option, the equivalent volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean specifically scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab handling of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the starting phase of inputting a sample into a lab's system. This process involves checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for abused substances. While it is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample to prep for Extraction. During this step, substances are extracted from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation, when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drugs for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage history: This method shows a drug use pattern over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent intake: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.
