In Sophia, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on these tests and has centers across all cities in the U.S. for hair testing. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has been increasingly integrated into drug testing processes. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officials utilize hair tests for their reliability. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, combined with the observed collection process, making them almost impossible to adulterate. However, urine tests are still the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair testing can provide around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, quite resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmatory purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in laboratory analysis of a drug test result comprise: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This task includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not supply.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for detecting drugs of abuse. While Screening is economically efficient for eliminating samples without drug usage, positive results require confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

If a specimen tests presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. This phase extracts drugs from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing presents the most challenges in methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical insight: Exhibits drug usage patterns over time instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sophia, WV, hair follicle testing stands out against urine testing due to its unparalleled detection capability and dependability. Unlike urine tests, which offer a limited detection window, hair tests reveal a broader history of drug intake. This method ensures a comprehensive insight into an individual's substance use, making it the preferred choice for many entities.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout advantages of hair follicle testing in Sophia, WV, is its extended detection window. It can recognize drug use up to 90 days prior, presenting employers a complete picture of a current or prospective employee's recent drug history. This benefit sets it apart from other testing methods with significantly shorter detection capabilities.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in Sophia, WV, are adept at minimizing the possibilities of tampering. The unique attributes of hair samples ensure that results remain unaltered and reliable. This tamper-resistant quality means that employers and agencies can trust the authenticity and accuracy of the findings provided by this testing method.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
