Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Stirrat, West Virginia. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing and have facilities across all cities nationwide to administer them. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used for testing. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has risen significantly in recent times. More and more, employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are choosing hair tests over traditional urine tests. Those adopting zero-tolerance policies favor hair follicle tests, which are also utilized by legal systems and probation officers. This testing method offers extended detection—up to 90 days—under observed conditions, which makes false results unlikely. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying substances used in the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a timeline of drug and alcohol use by holding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, comparatively resistant to adulteration, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirming results. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, or those extending beyond 10-panel, 150mg of the sample is recommended. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair imply scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result from a screen must be validated for court acceptance. Any samples that presumptively test positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at a far lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation based on necessity. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the accreditation of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are often more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
