In Stonewood, West Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing excels in comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations. We are proficient in hair-based testing for drugs and alcohol, with facilities available across every city in the United States. Testing generally requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or other body parts. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other custom options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent years as a method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers upholding zero-tolerance policies, as well as legal entities and probation officers, opt for these tests. The major advantage is their extended detection range, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process that is nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is a robust method utilized in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains long-term indicators of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its strands. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it can reveal a detection span for alcohol and drugs lasting up to about 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and shipped properly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it serves as an economical means to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen needs further validation to be admissible in a legal setting. Any samples that show a presumptively positive result in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the more challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a narrower detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are particularly hard to cheat, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical data: This method can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although sometimes referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stonewood, WV, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests, boasting superior detection accuracy and reliability. This testing can identify drug use over an extended period, making it an ideal choice for employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals looking to maintain rigorous detection standards.

Hair tests reduce the likelihood of tampering, provide an extensive detection window, and offer a straightforward, observed collection process. These benefits underscore the preference for hair testing in professional and legal environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
