Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

For comprehensive hair follicle testing in Switzer, West Virginia, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing. Our centers across all cities Nationwide are equipped to conduct precise hair drug or alcohol tests. With a requirement of having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body, we can test for drugs and alcohol/ETG or other tailored hair testing services.

Over the past few years, hair follicle testing for drugs has been increasingly preferred. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. With its long detection period of up to 90 days and inability to be easily tampered with, hair tests are ideal for zero-tolerance work policies, court orders, and probation cases. However, urine tests remain the top choice for detecting recent substance use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair, it offers a long-range overview of alcohol and drug use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can present an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. This method is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, it's advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s balance for measuring the sample. If head hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any further information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, rapid evaluation for illicit substances. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening demand a follow-up validation.

Should a specimen test presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex technique to execute.

Any confirmed positive screening result undergoes verification using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive outcome are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • High integrity: It is extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: Offers a comprehensive pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites present.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Switzer, WV, hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine tests. Hair tests reveal an extended history of drug use, while urine tests only detect recent substance intake. This longer detection window offers a clearer view of an individual's substance-related behavior over time.
The advantage of hair testing lies in its reliability. It rules out manipulation, thus maintaining integrity in drug screening processes. Employers benefit from this accuracy in ensuring workplace safety.

The accuracy and reliability of hair tests make them stand out. While urine tests may be compromised, hair tests provide a cheat-proof solution, detecting drug use that urine tests might miss. For a comprehensive and dependable approach, hair testing has the edge.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, providing a thorough overview of substance use history. This is particularly beneficial for employers in Switzer, WV, looking to assess the long-term habits of potential or current employees. Such insight assists in making informed hiring or disciplinary decisions.
With this extended detection period, the tests cover a significant time span, offering a comprehensive substance history analysis unlike any other testing method available.

Employers benefit from an extended detection window that sheds light on an individual's behavior over time. The ability to scrutinize drug use over an extended period sets hair testing apart, offering insights into conduct that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key strengths of hair follicle testing in Switzer, WV, is its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests significantly mitigate the risk of sample adulteration, guaranteeing results that are both trustworthy and undeniable.
By choosing hair follicle testing, concerns over test integrity decrease, as the method itself safeguards against manipulation. This provides peace of mind for both employers and test subjects alike.

Given its design, hair testing reduces tampering potential, making it dependable for important screenings. With high-stakes decisions often hinging on these results, choosing a test that's difficult to falsify ensures credible outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
