Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Verdunville, West Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing, specializing in hair tests, provides services in all cities nationwide capable of performing such tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support other specialized testing options.

Lately, drug test methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Used by employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists, hair tests are preferred over urine tests. Employers, courts, and probation systems favor hair tests for their zero-tolerance policies. The key advantage is their extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected visibly and hard to manipulate. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a detailed timeline of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We suggest determining the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, we denote scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory analysis for deriving a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step entails verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completing any further data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a screen returning positive must be validated for court eligibility. Any samples found presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are thoroughly washed. The entire laboratory series from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings have the capacity to identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection period.
  • Nearly impossible to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, lending greater accuracy to the results.
  • Offers temporal information: It outlines a usage pattern over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings tend to be more costly than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Verdunville, WV, outshines urine testing with its extended detection capabilities and accuracy. Superiority in detecting drug use lies in its ability to identify substances used over a broader time frame. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
