Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wallace, West Virginia. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair testing means we have centers across the Nation, including every city, ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head, or another body area, is needed. They can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other hair test purposes.

Lately, drug testing processes have increasingly employed hair follicle tests. Many employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. They are utilized by firms with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The main advantage is the extended detection period, capturing drug use up to 90 days with supervised collection, making them near-impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug usage, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a formidable method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by securing biomarkers within the growing hair shaft. When clipped near the scalp, it can present nearly a 3-month window to identify alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent body hair quantity can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all non-scalp hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result typically involves four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data entries lacking an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment to detect drug abuse. Although it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug consumption for most samples, any positive screen needs confirmation for court acceptance. Samples with a presumptive positive screen must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing stands as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Should they require it, all presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, an advantage over urine tests which have a shorter monitoring window.
  • Challenge to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Records historical usage: It provides an overview of drug consumption over a period, unlike tests that detect only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become visible in hair within about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can alter the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
