Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Walton, West Virginia. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing configurations.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more popular method for conducting drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug assessments are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, by courts, and for those on probation. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is its longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, through an observed sample collection, which is nearly impossible to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting drugs used in the previous 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations are now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece of around 200 hairs (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. Referring to head hair means scalp hair only. Body hair indicates all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial treatment of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid review for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be admissible in court. All samples that test presumably positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumably positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at notably lower levels than in other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methods to conduct.

Any positive screening result is confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to cheat: It is quite tough to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It can present a pattern of drug use over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Diversities in results: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has become a preferred choice over urine tests in Walton, WV, due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests cover a longer detection period and reduce the risk of sample tampering, making them a trustworthy choice for employers enforcing drug-free policies. This method offers clarity and dependability, ensuring a more accurate assessment of substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

In Walton, WV, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a significant advantage. Hair tests can detect substance use up to 90 days prior, unlike more limited urine tests. This long detection period grants employers a comprehensive view of an individual's drug use history, providing valuable insights into patterns of substance use, and making it a powerful tool in maintaining workplace sobriety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests in Walton, WV, offer a tamper-resistant option for employers and organizations. The nature of hair testing makes sample adulteration nearly impossible, contrasting with the weaknesses of urine tests. This method ensures credible results, reducing doubts about a sample's integrity and ensuring the credibility of the testing process, enhancing trust in drug testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
