Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Wick, WV. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we're experts in hair testing and have locations nationwide that can perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, drug testing has shifted more towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often require these instead of urine tests. Hair tests suit zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation. Their chief advantage is a longer detection window—up to 90 days—making them tough to circumvent. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis emerges as a robust means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug activity by encasing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal usage over approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is recommended. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is advised. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent portion of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" refers strictly to scalp hair. "Body hair" pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The four fundamental stages in the laboratory proceedings of a drug analysis are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab's system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening gives an initial hasty evaluation for drug abuse signs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be valid in court. Samples registering as presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method.

Verification of a positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a washing procedure before confirmation, as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards' accreditation.

Strengths of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to deceive: Hair drug tests are very tough to falsify, making results more precise.
  • Offers historical usage data: They can show a drug use pattern over time, not just immediate usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Wick, WV stands out against urine tests due to its superior accuracy. While urine tests can detect recent drug use, hair testing provides a broader view, uncovering usage history over several months. This extended timeframe offers a clearer picture, making it less prone to tampering than urine samples, enhancing its credibility.

The reliability of hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests with its consistent results over an extended detection time. Employers and authorities prefer hair testing for these benefits, as it more effectively signifies habitual substance use, rather than just recent consumption.

Extended Detection Window

In Wick, WV, hair follicle tests unveil drug histories extending up to 90 days, far surpassing the short scope of traditional testing methods. This expansive detection window assists employers in comprehending an applicant or employee's substance use history comprehensively, aiding in informed decision-making processes that impact workplace safety and integrity.

Professionals leveraging hair testing benefit from its wide-ranging detection abilities. Being able to review several months of potential substance use provides invaluable insight, particularly in scenarios where understanding consistent substance habits is crucial to monitoring and addressing issues effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Wick, WV, presents a significant advantage in its tamper-proof nature. Unlike other testing methods, the risk of sample alteration is substantially reduced, providing peace of mind with unchallenged results. Its robust security features make hair testing a preferred choice for maintaining the integrity of the screening process without concerns over manipulation.

Utilizing hair testing ensures reliability in results, with little room for interference. This trustworthiness not only aids employers but also supports legal and personal matters, where ensuring untainted results is paramount, underscoring the superior reliability of hair testing in contemporary drug screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
