Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Ainsworth, Wisconsin. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, and boasts testing centers in every city nationwide capable of performing hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body is required. The hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and individuals on probation widely use hair follicle drug tests. A key advantage of these tests is their extended detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days, through an observed collection, making them nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, the sample can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches in length, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. It's best to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be substituted. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in lab analysis of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a specimen is processed into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse detection. While this step is cost-efficient for ruling out drugs in most samples, any positive results in Screening must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples indicating positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening stage indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for the Extraction process. At this point, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Any presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter period.
  • High test integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
