Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Albertville, Wisconsin. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol exam, we excel in hair testing, with facilities in all major cities across the nation. Most situations need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, though body hair can also be tested. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer bespoke testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly adopted hair follicle exams. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine testing. Employers enforcing drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and probationary individuals are using these tests. The major advantage is its extended accuracy period, detecting drug use up to 90 days and almost impossible to alter, although urine tests remain the gold standard for recent (past 5 days) use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. It captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair can showcase a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A section measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process comprises four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning introduces a sample into a lab's framework. This step confirms the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drug abuse. It is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screening must be corroborated before being court-admissible. Samples suspected to be positive require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be suspected of being positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much reduced concentrations than other tests (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Verification of any presumed positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug analysis can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to circumvent, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivering historical insight: They depict a pattern of drug use over time rather than simply recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Detection requires roughly 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variances: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", they evaluate the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
