Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in the Allenville, WI area. Specializing in this testing method, we have centers across all U.S. cities, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair—be it head or body hair—is required. This method can effectively test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing strategies.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly replaced traditional testing methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction experts now favor these tests over urine-based options. Chosen by strict employers, courts, and probationary programs, hair follicle tests are valued for their extended detection window of up to 90 days, and the fact that they're nearly impossible to tamper with. Conversely, urine tests remain optimal for short-term detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly viewed as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extensive history by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strands. Once collected near the scalp, hair reveals drug and alcohol consumption over a roughly three-month period. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is ideal. It's advisable to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the lab involves four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with recording a sample into the lab system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and inputting any other necessary data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug use in most cases, positive results require Confirmation to be legally valid. All presumptively positive samples from Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing a complex methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is utilized for confirming any positive screening results. Samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to fake, thereby ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical insight: It can trace a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations might influence metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Allenville, WI, hair follicle tests surpass urine tests in multiple areas. They offer a considerably longer detection window and higher accuracy. Hair tests provide a broader perspective on drug use due to their extended effectiveness. Compared to urine tests, which only detect recent use, hair tests give a fuller view of an individual’s substance history, making it an indispensable tool for businesses and legal entities.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Allenville, WI, enables employers to assess an individual’s drug use history up to 90 days back. This window provides a more comprehensive view of an applicant or employee’s past, aiding in informed decision-making. Unlike urine tests, which only offer a short-term view, hair testing gives a true reflection of longer-term substance use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the significant advantages of using hair follicle tests in Allenville, WI is their tamper-resistant nature. They significantly reduce the likelihood of sample adulteration, resulting in consistent and trustworthy outcomes. Hair tests are almost impossible to falsify, ensuring that the results are a true representation of an individual’s consumption history, thus offering peace of mind and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
