Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Amnicon, Wisconsin. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we focus on hair testing with facilities across the country ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair testing options can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often choose it over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, and probation officers. Its primary advantage is a longer detection period, often up to 90 days, and it's collected under supervision, making tampering almost impossible. However, for detecting recent use (within 5 days), urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have become recognized as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a prolonged timeline of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Hair retrieval is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp will result in 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample in the laboratory’s system. This step entails confirming that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for substance abuse. Though it's an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs validation to be valid in judicial settings. Any samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the first specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, heightening result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug habits over an extended duration, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: Substances take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing forms.
  • Outcome variations: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal hair growth rates might alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
