In Angelo, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities in various cities across the nation capable of conducting hair examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from either the scalp or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug examinations. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair analyses over traditional urine screenings. Enterprises with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation candidates frequently utilize these tests. The main advantage of hair folicles tests is their extended detection timeframe, up to 90 days, which are hard to tamper with and involve supervised collection. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers in their fibers, offering a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can reveal substance use within an estimated 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment comprised of approximately 200 hair strands, akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil, adjacent to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and thorough verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler's scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn't an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair might suffice. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test outcome involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While screening effectively eliminates drug use for most samples at a reduced cost, a positive screen needs further verification for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. This phase extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is governed by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a usage pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond mere recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become recognizable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
