In Anson, Wisconsin, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, we specialize in hair tests, available at our centers nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, typically from the crown or elsewhere on the body. Hair analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probationary contexts. The key advantage is the extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. Collection is observed, making them extremely difficult to tamper with, although urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means for assessing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair traps biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging strand, offering a historical record of substance use. When taken from the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month history of drug and alcohol exposure. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximating the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields about 100mg, the preferred quantity for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measurement is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. Note that when head hair is mentioned, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, with body hair encompassing all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result incorporates four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This phase involves checking that the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any requisite data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment to identify substances of abuse. Though cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, any positive results from Screening require subsequent confirmation for legal validity. Samples that are initially positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

Should the Screening process indicate a potential positive result, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. Here, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at a significantly lower concentration than in other tests (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Verification of positive Screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The full laboratory process is scrutinized from Accessioning to Confirmation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are extremely difficult to falsify, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks usage history: It offers an overview of drug use over time rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Limited detection of recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentrations of drug metabolites present.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
