Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Apple River, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with locations across every city Nationwide to conduct a hair assessment. Approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or the body can generally be examined in most scenarios. Hair evaluations can determine drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Recently, employing hair follicle drug tests in substance analysis has become increasingly prevalent. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over the conventional urine analysis. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, legal authorities, and those on probation frequently utilize hair follicle evaluations. Hair testing's main advantage is its prolonged drug detection period, often reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, presenting little room for manipulation. Nevertheless, for evaluating drug use in the past 5 days, urine analysis continues to be the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record for alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drug substances. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to hair from the scalp. "Body hair" includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening involves conducting an initial rapid test for substance abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive result must be verified to be usable in legal settings. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening outcomes require Confirmation through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Allows detection of substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers usage history: Provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Requires 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
