Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Janesville, Wisconsin. Need a hair drug or alcohol test? Our specialization in hair testing and network of centers in all cities nationwide allow us to conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is required. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to custom testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often require it over traditional urine tests. Used by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation, the key advantage is its longer detection period, up to 90 days. It's collected under supervision and nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers an extended timeline for alcohol and drug detection. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal evidence of substance use over roughly a 3-month span. The collection of hair is uncomplicated, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A lock of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For tests such as EtG, supplemental checks, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to measure the hair specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result is comprised of four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s operations. It involves ensuring that the sample was securely sealed and sent, allocating a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any remaining data entry that is absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, expedient evaluation for illicit drugs. Despite Screening being a cost-efficient approach to disregard drug use in most samples, a positive result from the screen requires validation to hold up in judicial proceedings. Any samples showing a presumed positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumed positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial collection is retrieved and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are removed from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other testing forms (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full span of laboratory work from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments cover a shorter period.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug assessment, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It delivers a timeline of drug use over an interval of time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to pinpoint recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite frequent reference as "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the actual hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
