Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Arbor Vitae, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this area, and we have centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, the approach for drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle assessments. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over typical urine screens. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation use hair follicle tests. The main advantage of these tests is the longer drug detection timeframe—up to 90 days—collected under observation, making them nearly foolproof. However, for usage in the past 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures extended data on alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. Obtaining a sample near the scalp allows detection of alcohol and drugs for up to a three-month time span. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of nearly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be procured. When citing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses any other forms of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s framework. This process ensures the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be acceptable in court. Any samples forecasted as positive in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques conduct Confirmation of any positive screening findings. All samples suspected of being positive undergo washing prior to confirmation when required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests provide detection of drug use for nearly 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug use, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A timespan of around 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Arbor Vitae, WI, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to several benefits. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy and reliability, uncovering drug use over a longer span. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
