Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Athens, Wisconsin. If there's a need for hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise is in hair testing, with centers available in cities all over the nation ready to conduct these assessments. Ideally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body which can be utilized generally. Analyzing hair can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other options.

In recent times, executing drug assessments increasingly involves hair follicle examinations. More employers, legal bodies, and substance misuse experts now opt for hair analysis over standard urine tests. Hair testing is favored by employers with strict anti-drug use policies, courts, and those under probation. The main advantage of hair analysis is a longer detection timeframe for substance use—usually up to 90 days, conducted in a supervised setting, providing strong security against tampering. Nevertheless, urine testing remains the most precise for detecting substance use in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An optimal sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equals 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in lab-processing a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial quick glance for illicit drugs. While Screening efficiently eliminates drug use in most samples, a positive result mandates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which positions hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It offers a pattern of drug use spanning time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
