Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Augusta, Wisconsin. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing and have facilities across all cities nationwide capable of administering a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body is used. Hair tests can be analyzed for various substances, including alcohol/ETG or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method in the field of drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer a hair drug test over the standard urine test. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor hair follicle testing. A key advantage is its extensive detection window, covering approximately 90 days, and the collection process is strictly monitored, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain more precise for very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an effective method for identifying usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a lengthy history of substance use by encasing biomarkers within its growing strands. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additions, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. Our reference to head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, entering a sample into the lab’s system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any absent data entry that an electronic chain of custody system didn't provide.

Screening serves as an initial cost-effective evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although it’s efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive result needs confirmation for court admissibility. Those samples yielding presumptive positives in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample indicates presumption of positivity at the Screening phase, extra hair from the original sample is retrieved for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the toughest methodology to execute.

Positives in screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS testing. Samples identified as presumptive positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, a longer period compared to urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows historical data: It offers a usage pattern over an extended timeframe, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent consumption: Substances aren't detectable in hair for 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests often exceed the cost of other drug testing formats.
  • Result variance: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
