Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Aurora, Wisconsin. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our specialty is in hair-based testing with centers located nationwide to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing protocols. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over standard urinalysis. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers frequently utilize these tests. The key advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, which is collected under supervision and is very hard to manipulate. Despite this, for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended track record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair may supply roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair might be gathered. When we mention head hair, this specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages entailed in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a specimen into a lab’s system. This process confirms that the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Any samples that appear positive in Screening call for an additional confirmation.

For samples presumed positive during the Screening step, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a demanding methodology to execute.

Verification of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumed positive sample is cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Protracted detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers past usage data: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely the latest use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in Aurora, WI, hair testing offers superior advantages. Notably, it enhances detection accuracy due to the extended drug use detection window. Urine tests often miss recent substance intake, but hair tests offer a more profound, reliable look into a person's substance use history, marking them as a better choice for employers and institutions.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing in Aurora, WI, captures a broader drug use history with its up to 90-day detection period. This expansive window provides a more comprehensive profile of an individual's substance use, benefiting employers seeking a full assessment of an employee's or applicant's past. It offers insights beyond the limitations of shorter-term testing methods, supporting informed decision-making processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
