Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Bagley, Wisconsin. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair assessments. Our centers nationwide can facilitate hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown of the head or body is needed. Tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for substance testing, favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation use these tests for their long detection period—up to 90 days—collected under supervision, rendering evasion nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. Hair traps biomarkers in its growing strands, offering a long-term record of substance use. Hair collected right at the scalp can present a detection history for up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Additionally, it's straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A snippet measuring 1.5 inches, roughly equating to 200 strands of hair (or the thickness of a #2 pencil) found next to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample weight for testing and validation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If there's no scalp hair available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, we mean only scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The analysis of drug test results in a laboratory consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This step verifies appropriate sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any missing data not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. Though it's a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples appearing positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, more hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug testing being the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screenings is achieved through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples initially testing positive are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests offer detection of drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to the smaller timeframe of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating in hair drug testing is exceedingly tough, thus making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It can show a timeline of drug use over time, beyond recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes drugs about 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing often incurs higher expenses compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Bagley, WI, offers distinct advantages over urine tests. One major benefit is the extended detection timeframe—it can identify drug use over the past 90 days. This period allows employers a more thorough understanding of an individual's substance history, unlike urine tests which offer a much shorter detection window.

Moreover, hair tests are less susceptible to tampering. This feature makes them ideal for ensuring results are consistent and reflect actual substance use patterns.

Extended Detection Window

In Bagley, WI, hair follicle testing stands out for its extensive detection horizon, capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days. This long detection window allows employers and authorities to gain a broader understanding of a person's drug history, far beyond what other methods can offer.

Benefits of Extended Period:

  • Comprehensive history of drug use.
  • Suitable for pre-employment screening.
  • Invaluable for ongoing monitoring.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the key strengths of hair follicle testing in Bagley, WI, is its resistance to tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
